Battle of the Christians

Religious left gears up to face right counterpart

What took them so long?

"I join the ranks of those who are angry because I have watched as the faith I love has been taken over by fundamentalists who claim to speak for Jesus but whose actions are anything but Christian," declared the Rev. Robin Meyers of the United Church of Christ in Oklahoma, who has written a new book, "Why the Christian Right is Wrong.

Freedom to Marry
along with GLAAD and The National Gay & Lesbian Task Force have joined with a number of civic, religious, labor and civils rights leaders to run full-page newspaper advertisements beginning today, and appearing from coast to coast, declaring their commitment to working toward equality for gay and lesbian families. The ads, titled "Marriage Matters," are appearing in 51 publications.

It's a nice ad. I saw it in today's New York Times, and I was happy to see photographs of actual couples along with details on how long each couple had been together. The idea of putting this in newspapers is a good one to get the faces and the message in front of those who are appalled by it for no other reason than blind ignorance or outright hatred (often masked of course by religion).

Without a doubt, there will be some interesting letters to the editors of the papers in which these ads appear. You can bet on it.
